The world is, undoubtedly, in a new era of uncertainty with multiple crises, including pandemics, wars and conflicts, and climate change. The epidemics of HIV, TB and malaria continue to devastate communities. For example, in 2021, TB killed 1.6 million people and was the leading killer of people living with HIV. In addition to the epidemics of HIV, TB, and malaria, the world has not fully recovered from the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly impacted health, lives, and livelihoods and caused a social and economic crisis characterized by mass unemployment, increased impoverishment, and exacerbation of longstanding inequities.
The 20-year success story of the Global Fund is proof that the world can get back on track toward ending HIV, TB and malaria, build resilient and sustainable systems for health and strengthen pandemic preparedness, making the world more equitable and safer from future threats. Working hand in hand with communities, governments, the private sector, civil society and technical partners, the Global Fund partnership has helped save over 59 million lives.
