AWPCAB launches Pass the Mic Africa: Young People Take the Lead on HIV Prevention

Remember when someone “left the mic on”? It turns out it never stopped moving.
The African Women Prevention Community Accountability Board (AWPCAB) has launched Pass the Mic Africa, a four-week campaign that puts young people at the center of HIV prevention conversations.
What is Pass the Mic Africa?
Young people in Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Malawi and Zambia are taking the mic. They are bringing HIV prevention into the spaces, languages, questions and formats that feel like their own. The campaign is built around four ideas: choice, voices, access and action.
Choice matters here because there is no single prevention method that works for everyone. The campaign aims to widen awareness of the options available, including oral PrEP, injectable PrEP, the dapivirine ring, condoms, PEP and lenacapavir. It also challenges assumptions about who prevention is for and how these conversations should happen.
A relay, not a broadcast
The mic moves from country to country and from one young person to the next. Eventually it reaches you.
Anyone can join in:
- Catch it: Take the mic when it reaches you.
- Add yours: Visit the AWPCAB Pass the Mic page and make a personal commitment. It can be as simple as talking to three friends about prevention choices, sharing verified information with your youth group, or challenging a myth you hear in your community.
- Pass it on: Generate your “My Mic. My Move” digital card, share it, and challenge others to do the same.
Participants can also report back on how their move went. AWPCAB does not collect HIV status or other sensitive health data.

Why it matters
When young people lead, prevention messages become more relevant and more honest, and they reach more people. At WACI Health, we are proud to see this youth-led, accountability-driven approach grow across the region.
So when the mic gets to you, what will you say?
