TB Advocacy and Mobilisation
End TB, led by Africa and powered by communities
Rise Up Now 4 TB (Run4TB) is WACI Health’s campaign on tuberculosis (TB), built on the principle that TB-affected communities must be at the centre of every response. It calls on governments to deliver the commitments they made to end TB and works alongside TB-affected communities to hold leaders to account.
TB is preventable and treatable, yet it killed 1.23 million people in 2024, according to the World Health Organization. South Africa and Kenya are among the 30 countries with the highest TB burden. UN declarations set the targets for testing, treatment and funding, but whether those targets are met is decided in national plans and budgets.
WACI Health works with TB-affected communities and civil society to take their priorities into the negotiations on UN declarations, and then to urge the governments that signed them to fund and carry them out.
Working with the Stop TB Partnership, the campaign has also reached civil society and TB-affected communities across the region, in countries including Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and Zambia. The work has been supported at different times by the Stop TB Partnership’s Challenge Facility for Civil Society and the ACTION partnership, and it connects to WACI Health’s Global Fund advocacy through GFAN Africa.
Purpose
What We Do
WACI Health works closely with the TB Task Team of the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) Civil Society Forum. This includes marking World TB Day each year with advocacy letters, symposiums and policy dialogues led by TB-affected communities, in South Africa and across the region. WACI Health leads the Task Team’s work on the UN High-Level Meetings on TB, and has worked with Parliament and the Global TB Caucus to build national and provincial TB caucuses of parliamentarians. Around UN High-Level Meetings, WACI Health engages UN missions, the African Union and the Pan-African Parliament to carry African civil society priorities into the negotiations. With the Africa Coalition on Tuberculosis, it has brought African civil society together to develop a shared position on TB, building on the Common African Position on TB.
Decode TB, the campaign’s youth strand, is a digital platform built with Impact Drivers and South Africa’s Department of Basic Education to teach young people about TB and TB services.
