KENYA NATIONAL PRE-UN HIGH-LEVEL MEETING CIVIL SOCIETY CONSULTATION

Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is a critical priority for nations worldwide, aiming to ensure that all individuals have access to essential health services without suffering financial hardship. In Kenya, the pursuit of UHC is particularly vital. The nation is confronted with a myriad of health challenges, from infectious diseases like TB and HIV/AIDS to the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases.

Kenya, as a part of the broader African landscape, faces unique hurdles in achieving UHC. Many regions on the continent struggle with health access disparities, and Kenya is no exception. With its diverse population spread across urban centres and expansive rural areas, ensuring equitable health access for all its citizens is challenging.

In Kenya, children and young adolescents remain particularly vulnerable. Kenya grapples with its share of this burden, highlighting the need for inclusive health coverage. The alarming reality is that many Kenyan children with health challenges remain unreported or undiagnosed, indicating gaps in the current healthcare coverage system.

Kenya’s commitment to UHC is in line with the health targets of the Sustainable Development Goals, which aim for health and well-being for all by 2030. The 2019 ALM Declaration, endorsed by Kenya, amplifies this commitment by emphasizing the need for robust health systems in Africa.

Financing UHC remains a pivotal challenge. With significant resources required for comprehensive health coverage, Kenya faces the intricate task of mobilizing funds both domestically and externally. A vast portion of the health budget remains unfunded, challenging the country’s strides towards UHC.

In essence, UHC in Kenya is not just a goal but a pressing necessity. A successful realization promises not only health equity but also a robust socio-economic landscape for Kenya. While UHC is a cornerstone of health progress in Kenya, specific health threats, such as Tuberculosis (TB), present unique challenges and priorities for the nation.
